The Inn at Ellis River

The Inn at Ellis River

We have had a relatively snowless winter in New England, and we were interested to see what we could do in the Jackson/North Conway area with little snow on the ground. We had thought about taking the SnowCoach up Mt. Washington to see the mountain in winter, but that activity wasn’t possible during our trip. Luckily, the BnB where we were staying offered plenty to do during our weekend away.

The Inn at Ellis River is located in Jackson, NH, just outside of North Conway and approximately 30 minutes away from the Highland Center at Crawford Notch. It’s location is perfect for people who want to get to any of the area’s outdoor amenities.

Our room was cozy, partially because the large space had a working fireplace, and the inn furnished logs to burn each day. Like a lot of BnBs, the bed was extremely comfortable, but this was the first time that we felt like we needed a step-stool to climb into it! So big and cozy and comfy!

Inside our room we had everything that we could want for the weekend. Some of the more thoughtful touches were the chocolates and bottle of water that were left out for us each day. There were also some comfortable chairs around the fireplace where we could sit and read while being warmed by the flames.

Boasting 20 rooms, each is named after a local waterfall. The White Mountains are known for the many waterfalls in the area, and there are many images of these beautiful spots scattered throughout the property. Our room was the Glen Ellis Falls room, and it had a great view of the historic barn just outside.

The inn offers many things for visitors to do on the property. There is a large dining room with a coffee maker and snacks out for guests at all hours of the day, a sitting room complete with a piano and board games, and DVDs and books available for guests to borrow. Just around the corner from that, there is an “olde-timey” bar complete with antique register. No bar would be complete without a dartboard and pool table and Ellis River comes through on both counts! I totally schooled Jocelyn on the 3 games that we played together.

Looking for another way to relax? Don’t worry, they thought of that, too! A room on the back end of the inn houses a hot tub and is filled with tropical plants and ferns that contrast with the snow and cross country skiers passing by the windowed room. In the summer, there is also a pool located at the front of the property for guests to use.

Visiting while there is snow on the ground? Lucky duck! Mention to the proprietors where you are thinking about going. The inn offers coupons for skiing and other activities at local places, and they have a plethora of resources to find local restaurants and activities.

Breakfast starts at 8:30 promptly! Guests sign up for their breakfast time the night before at the front desk.  One morning we ate waffles with blueberry sauce, and we had cinnamon streusel French toast the other day. Both mornings, the owners served breakfast with with bacon or sausage and appetizers like almond bread, strawberry bread, and homemade granola. The cinnamon streusel French toast was so tasty we ate it before we thought to take a photo of it!

Perhaps ironically, we woke up to 6 inches of snow on our last day. The scene looked like it was taken right out of a Currier & Ives print!

Even though there was definitely a lack of winter while we visited, it was an awesome weekend! We look forward to visiting again.

  1. Even though we have not had the best of luck with Bed and Breakfasts or small inns, we love finding unique places with genuine character. Sounds like you found exactly that at the Inn at Ellis River!

  2. Nice location and perfect for relaxation. Chocolate daily? That’s a cool offering. I wonder why the television is put on that location. Hehe

    1. Daily chocolate was great AND there were brownies and cookies as snacks too. The TV was a little far away but we were out of the room for a large part of the day so it did’t really matter 🙂
