Amazing Places: Benefit Street in Rhode Island
Could you imagine living in this house? What a beautiful building!
Officially called the “George Drowne House,” it was built in 1862. By that point, Benefit Street was already populated with colonial houses, but this house was definitely one of the stand outs for me! Located at 367 Benefit Street, there are 10 condos inside this house now which rises 2 1/2 stories above the ground.
The rest of the street is pretty amazing as well. I was told that it is the longest (1 mile) collection of houses from the 18th and 19th century in the nation!
To Get There:
- Park at Roger Williams National Memorial (282 North Main Street
Providence, RI 02903) for free for 2 hours. - The Visitor Center is just feet from the parking lot and has bathrooms and maps, plus a small gift shop.
- Benefit Street is located the block parallel up the hill to North Main Street. Make sure you are comfortable walking up and down a significant slope (might be slippery in winter due to ice)
- Enjoy!
