Photos of Travels Past
One of my favorite photos from our travels comes from our trip to Munich, Germany. In the city square is an amazing glockenspiel and a statue of angels slaughtering different plagues and evils. This one seemed to be talking about bird flu, which was raging pretty nearby in England at the time we were in Germany. I have yet to see a statue as awesome as this one that included a chicken. 🙂

Crazy statue! I love wandering the streets of European cities just because they’re absolutely full of quirky street art and sculptures like this, each with a different history, story or legend behind it. Thanks for sharing this shot from Munich!
Aimlessly wandering in an European city where I don’t speak the language has become one of my fav things to do. So many awesome parks and statues and weird stuff. Munich is definitely one of my favorite international cities.
I’ve seen the famous glockenspiel but I never noticed that statue! I agree that any public statue that includes a chicken is inherently awesome. 🙂 It definitely makes me curious about how long ago it was put up, and what exactly it’s supposed to be depicting. It would be a shame if a chicken was being slaughtered because of bird flu (even if it’s just a sculpture and no real chickens were harmed); the real enemy is a virus, but of course how do you make a statue of a virus? 🙂 Or the statue could be hundreds of years old and directed at an evil that’s long since been forgotten. It’s fun to speculate!
Chickens are excellent. The ones in Kauai are amusing. The statues were put up in the 1600s it looks like and each of the fighting angels on the bottom are defending against an issue: war, hungry, heresy, and our little chicken friend is pestilence 🙂
Of course, virus knowledge in that time was extremely limited (Hello LEECHES! ugh) so this makes sense. I need to go back and photograph the other 3 statues now 😉
So fun to go through past trip photos and relive the adventure! The good and bad of digital photography these days I guess. Love this shot. I unfortunately do not remember very much from my time in munich… beer gardens… haha!
Haha!
This is at the base of the St. Mary statue. There is an angel fighting a dragon, snake, lion, and this chicken guy. Germans are funny 🙂
