The Best Laid Plans…
Whether they are of mice or men, they truly do often go awry unfortunately.
For the past two years, I’ve been trying to get us out to Boston Light. This is an amazing site that is part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. As a cooperation between the National Park Service, Department of Conservation and Recreation, and the Coast Guard, it truly is a unique site in America.
Situated on Little Brewster Island, the Boston Light is the only manned lighthouse in the United States. This duty is carried out by a civilian keeper named Sally Snowman, who is also the first women keeper in the lighthouse’s history! First built in 1716, that original lighthouse was blown up during the American Revolution. It was finally rebuilt in 1783, but has been changed around multiple times.
Last year, I was unable to get out to it because of much needed repair work that was happening to it. This year was going to be THE year, I had declared…and then I changed jobs so that I lost my one weekend day off. It is the price you pay for being in a visitor focused job sometimes 🙁
After checking with Eric, we decided to go this weekend on October 3rd. It wasn’t until about a week or two ago that I realized that a shutdown of the federal government would stop me from being able to get out there. Crap! However, that crisis seemed to be (and is now) averted (at least until December 11, ugh). Unfortunately, another problem popped up: Hurricane Joaquin. The first hurricane of the season and he’s got his sights set on the East coast. With the prediction of 12-15 foot seas on Friday and potentially Saturday, the Coast Guard rightly cancelled the trips this weekend. Since it was the last weekend, I am back to square one 🙁 Luckily (!) next year is the Tercentenary of Boston Light and I plan to be there with cupcakes!
Now, to plan what we will do instead…visit a winery? Make stew? Bingewatch bad TV? Hmm…
What travel plans have you had ruined by forces of nature?
* Thanks to the Boston Public Library for those last two photos! One day, I’ll have my own 😉
